Drawing 0 - 60 in Weeks

Gavin often spends a considerable amount of time contemplating an action or being exposed to an idea before committing himself to the action or idea. With drawing and art in general, this has been the case. At daycare, he never seemed to participate much in the art activities led by his teachers. The other kids folders were always packed with drawings and paintings while Gavin's only occasionally had a drawing or a painting. Thinking every kid loves to draw, we have bought various supplies to support artsy activities, but Gavin never seemed to have any interest. I have to admit that I was disappointed that our fridge was not full of colorful scribbles.

I should have been careful what I was wishing for... A few weeks ago, Gavin started to express his desire to draw. This consisted of balls of scribbles of one color, then several colors, then different "textures" using different writing implements (pens, pencils, markers, etc.). Gavin appeared to be making up for lost drawing time. He could easily sit down and draw two dozen pictures in just minutes gobbling up all the spare notebooks and printer paper in the house. At school, he routinely created several drawings a day and tacked them up on the fridge out of reach of Liam.

After a few weeks of scribbles, Gavin began naming them. This occurred during the holidays and Kiersten harnessed his drawings by having him decorate cards. Each drawing got a title like "Slide" or "Fast Slide" or "Long Slide". Many of the drawings seem to be slide-themed.

Then his drawing evolved to the next step -- people.

These are the people Gavin has drawn so far, in chronological order, and they crack me up. I especially like his signature squiggle for hair above each head. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.
